Summary

The June plum, Spondias Dulcis is of the family, Anacardaceae (Family of Mangoes, Cashews and Sumac).

Known as the June Plum, Ambarella, Jew plum, Golden apple, Hog plum, Kedondong. It is a tropical fruit also found in Hawaii, Tahiti and Florida. Though native to Melanesia through Polynesia, it was has been introduced into tropical areas of both the Old and New World. Popular in Jamaica.

The fruit is about 8 – 10 cm long, fairly heavy for size with dark, orange-brown rough skin, marked by ‘lines’ which shape the fruit. It is best to cut it open because of the spiky seed at the centre.

The fruit has 5 distinct ‘sections’ with bright orange and fibrous flesh/pulp.

Crunchy, sweet and sour flesh reminiscent of pineapple, mango and a hint of apple. It has a musky scent – somewhat melon, a bit of pawpaw, faintest trace of ‘queen of the night’.
